Gautam Gambhir, the former mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, takes on his first assignment as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team in this series. Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the T20 captain for the Sri Lanka tour, with Shubman Gill as the vice-captain. Notably, some key players such as Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj will be making their comebacks after missing out on the Zimbabwe series.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from T20 internationals after the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup, will be playing in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has also announced Charith Asalanka as their new captain for the T20 series, succeeding Wanindu Hasaranga. Meanwhile, veteran Dinesh Chandimal is set to play his first T20I match since February 2022.
Injuries have affected the Sri Lankan squad, with Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera ruled out due to injury. They will be replaced by Dilshan Madushanka and Asitha Fernando. In men’s T20 internationals, India has won 19 out of 29 matches against Sri Lanka, while Sri Lanka has recorded nine victories, with one match ending without a result. The last encounter between the two teams was in January last year, where India emerged victorious with Suryakumar Yadav’s exceptional performance, helping them seal the series 2-1.
